This season’s Public Works production is a powerful concert experience of PERICLES, the Bard’s epic about losing and re-discovering faith. Reconceived by playwright and songwriter Troy Anthony, this magnificent new production performed by Public Works community members from all over New York City, is a celebration of life, love, and transformation. Inspired by Gospel music and the rousing power of the Black church, this new concert adaptation will be performed in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Associate Artistic Director of the Classical Theatre of Harlem Carl Cofield directs.

Spoilers ahead!

ANTIOCH: Prince Pericles sets off to marry King Antiochus’ daughter, but solving a deadly riddle reveals their incestuous relationship. Rather than expose them and risk his life, Pericles flees. 
TARSUS: Pericles aids famine-stricken Tarsus, and the people offer him refuge. He learns assassins are still after him. He sails away, only to be shipwrecked. 
PENTAPOLIS: Washed ashore on Pentapolis, fishermen lead Pericles to a jousting tournament for Princess Thaisa’s hand. He wins both the contest and her love. They marry, and Thaisa becomes pregnant. News of Antiochus’ death allows Pericles to return as King of Tyre. 
AT SEA & EPHESUS: A storm at sea claims Thaisa’s life during childbirth. Her body washes ashore in Ephesus, where healers revive her. Believing Pericles and the baby dead, Thaisa becomes a priestess. 
TARSUS & MYTILENE: Pericles entrusts baby Marina to Tarsus. Years later, she’s kidnapped by pirates and sold to a brothel in Mytilene, where her virtue and light transform those around her. The governor, having experienced Marina’s gift, brings her to the grief-stricken Pericles in hopes she will revive his spirits. In their encounter, Pericles realizes he has found his daughter. 
EPHESUS: Guided by the goddess Diana, Pericles and Marina visit the temple in Ephesus. There, he finds Thaisa. The family is finally reunited in joy.
