More than just stages and seats, The Public is a platform for democracy. A gathering place. A celebration of what a public space can be when it’s shaped by the values we all share: community, inclusion, and joy.
We are your theater — ready to inspire a new generation.
Free Shakespeare in the Park, Mobile Unit, and Public Works are the purest demonstrations of The Public’s belief that culture belongs to everyone.
From producing Shakespeare under the stars at The Delacorte Theater in Central Park, to staging free, high-quality performances where our communities live, to creating theater that blurs the boundaries between professional artists and community members — Shakespeare’s work belongs to every New Yorker across all five boroughs. Free. For all. Forever.
From the first spark of an idea to a fully staged performance, we support writers, directors, musicians, and multi-disciplinary artists at every stage of their professional development.
Our commitment to offer a robust slate of residencies and artist development programs like the Emerging Writers Group, Joe's Pub Vanguard Residency, and Directing Fellowship ensures that artists reach their full, creative potential.
At The Public, we are pleased to accept donations made in a variety of manners, including but not limited to wire transfers, stocks, checks, and donor-advised funds. Specific instructions for each of these methods can be found on our "More Ways to Give" page.
